This effect is used to draw attention to the centre of the image by darkening or reducing saturation of the rest of the frame, with the middle remaining light.
To get this effect, I used the elliptical marquee tool to select the main part of the image, the main part of this image is the whole body so I made sure the elliptical marquee tool went around her. I then changed the feather to around 20px. I pressed 'shift' 'cmd' and 'i' which is the short cut to select inverse. I then pressed image and then to adjustments where I moved the brightness down. Because I had selected the inverse it meant that the main part of the image wasn't changed so remained lighter than the rest. Because I had changed the feathering, it gradually gets darker instead of suddenly changing. Using the burn tool the outside can be darkened further.
